FIFA updates its code of ethics; imposes sanctions for harassment, abuse and exploitation
The highest institution of football has sent a circular to all dependent associations to inform them of the great news of this new Code, through which it is intended to respond to FIFA's effort to "protect the image of football, especially its own, and thus preventing illegal, immoral or contrary methods and practices from ethical principles from harming it.”
The adjustments to the code of ethics were presented in Paris during the FIFA Council, there they were approved "due to the special responsibility of safeguarding the integrity and reputation of football around the world," the body chaired by Gianni Infantino reported in the statement. .
« FIFA applies a policy of zero tolerance towards human rights violations, and is committed to safeguarding the integrity and well-being of all those who carry out activities related to football and, in particular, those who are in a vulnerable situation," the organization explained. And he added that "with the classification of sexual abuse and exploitation, infractions of this nature will be punished with penalties of at least ten years."
The changes will increase the efficiency of the Independent Ethics Committee, while advancing "necessary" modifications for the proper functioning of football, according to FIFA.
Among all the changes, the inclusion of sexual abuse and exploitation with specific sanctions within article 23, corresponding to the protection of physical and mental integrity, stands out. Violation of these new assumptions will have a minimum punishment of 10 years.
Other modifications to the FIFA Code of Ethics
In article 27, concerning bribery, reference to the term corruption will be included, as well as to the term "embezzlement of funds", in relation to the concept of misappropriation of funds.
The objective will be to avoid any misunderstanding about FIFA's stance against "unethical conduct in football."
In the new Code of Ethics, the decision-making body will be guaranteed the possibility of imposing sanctions without a maximum limit, when in the past it was one third higher than that applicable to the most serious sanction (in the case of a series of infractions with a maximum sanction of 5 years, the maximum applicable would be 7 years and 5 months).
In article 34, referring to independence, the members of the independent Ethics Commission may not hold other positions in federations, confederations or in FIFA itself. There will be one exception: positions that they can hold as members of a judicial body.
Finally, amendments regarding transparency will also be included. FIFA will ensure that hearings are public if requested by interested parties, as well as free of charge by the legal authorities.
