The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) has launched an online, interactive view of the government’s national and state energy data and information currently available to the public.
The agency designed the new portal with a range of users in mind, including B2B Email List policy makers, energy analysts, and the general public, who want to locate and compare state energy data and rankings and customize their own maps and charts, using an assortment of interactive tools.
The portal takes EIA’s vast portfolio of state energy data and analyses and organizes it geographically. Its 30-layer mapping feature provides a dynamic visual representation of energy infrastructure and energy resources at the national, state, Congressional district, or county level. Map layers for Federal lands and Electric Reliability regions are also included.
Users can pan and zoom in to see energy facilities and resources related to:
Production: power plants, oil refineries, and coal mines
Distribution: electric transmission lines, natural gas pipelines, and liquefied natural gas import terminals
Fossil fuel resources: coal, oil, and natural gas basins, plays, and fields
Renewable energy resources: wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal potential
In addition to customizable maps, the portal summarizes each state’s ranking of its energy production, consumption, prices, and more. Users can dig deeper into any state’s energy profile to learn more about its crude oil and natural gas production, renewable resources, natural gas and electricity prices, and carbon dioxide emissions and compare that data to other states and the national average.
For detailed information on any of the 6,300 power plants in the United States, such as the amount of fuel used and monthly output of a specific facility, the portal links users directly to that plant’s data in EIA’s electricity data browser.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on world leaders to take stronger action to protect the planet’s seas, warning about the effects of pollution, resource depletion, climate change and acidification. He said oceans play a critical role in the health of the planet as well as the economy.
The EPA reissued Clean Water Act permits to the Guam Waterworks Authority for the Northern District and Agana Sewage Treatment plants. The permits require both plants to upgrade to full secondary treatment and establish wastewater quality levels consistent with secondary treatment requirements, the agency said.
Jay-Cee Cleaners, a former dry cleaning business in Nelsonia, Va., and its former owner John L. Darby, have agreed to reimburse the EPA for costs the agency incurred while responding to the release of hazardous substances once used at the site. The agency’s response costs were $616,351. Darby also agreed to resolve his failure to comply with EPA’s information gathering efforts by paying a penalty, the agency said – though it didn’t specify the amount.
In January, McDonald’s USA became the first national restaurant chain to serve fish bearing the MSC eco-label at all of its US locations. Earlier this week, Sodexo announced it will serve Marine Stewardship Council-certified seafood at 11 Washington, DC-area locations beginning this month.
A study published in the current volume of the journal Biological Conservation says the MSC certification process is too lenient and discretionary, allowing controversial fisheries to be certified. The MSC label may be misleading both consumers and conservation funders, the study says.
